The Women's Curling squads began Olympic play Tuesday with Team USA unable to stay ahead of Team Japan which won 9-7. Canada edged out Switzerland 5-4, Germany beat Russia 9-5 and Denmark lost to Sweden 6-5.

VANCOUVER — Team USA curling skip Debbie McCormick said that finishing ninth out of 12 teams on a trip to Korea, shortly after her team had secured its Olympic berth, was a "good wakeup call."

It might be time to reset that alarm clock.

The U.S. jumped to leads of 3-0 and 4-1 against Japan Tuesday, but surrendered a pair of three-point ends in a 9-7 loss.

The match came down to less than an inch after McCormick's final rock left a stone for each team on the button. A measurement awarded Japan the final point and the victory in the opening game of a 10-game round-robin tournament.
